Products and SEO (Search engine optimization)

As with all areas of your website, it is good practise to optimize your pages for search engines. For more details on SEO, see Improving Search Engine Optimization (SEO) .

There are a couple of ways you can use Business Catalyst to optimize your products for search engines as described below.

Customizing individual product URLs

You can customize the URLs of your individual product pages. This option allows you to create SEO friendly URLs.

  1. Select E-Commerce > Products, then select one of your products from the list.

  2. Click Edit next to the URL section

  3. Enter a SEO friendly name for your product to be used in the URL

  4. Click Edit next to the URL, enter a unique URL.

  5. Click Save.

Adding metadata to individual product pages

You can add metadata to individual products which will give each product page its own unique SEO properties.

  1. Select E-Commerce > Products, then select one of your products from the list.

If you have not created any products, see the Create a product  section above.

  2. Click to expand the SEO Metadata section

  3. Specify the following:

    • Product Title - This is used as the title of the large product page.
    • Product Meta Description - This is added as the meta description for the large product page.
  4. Click Save.

The next step is to customize your product detail layout to add the SEO meta data to the head of your product detail pages.

Select Site Manager > Module Templates, and then select Online Shop Layouts.

Select the Individual Product Large Layout and then click the HTML view. Create the <head> and </head> tags if they're not already in the HTML view.

Enter the below between the <head> and </head> tags:

    Save the layout.

The information you entered in the product Metadata description field will now be added to the meta data in the head of your product pages. To test this, preview one of your products and view the HTML source.

Note: SEO Metadata can also be imported using the product import template.

Products and canonical URLs

If your product is placed in multiple catalogs it will basically be accessible using multiple URLs. You can choose one of the URLs to be marked as a canonical URL in order to prevent search engines from marking your content as duplicated.

By default, BC will pick the first product URL and make it canonical, insert a link rel=canonical in page head and response header to instruct browsers and search engine which is the preferred URL of the product.

If you would like to change the canonical URL for one or more products you have two options:

  • on the product details panel expand the "SEO Metadata" panel and use the "Product Canonical URL" drop down
  • change the canonical URL in bulk using an export file. To do so first export your products, make sure on the "Catalogue" column the first catalogue is the one you want the system to use for the canonical URL and re-import.

For example for the product "Sample Product1" in the import file below the canonical URL will be "/classic-boutique/sample-product-1"
