Learn how to use your own custom domain (instead of *.businesscatalyst.com)
A domain name is the address that visitors use to access the site. If you want to get rid of the sitename.businesscatalyst.com url (which is automatically assigned when you start a trial site) and use your own unique domain name rather than the default URL, you can simlpy register one and set it up with your site.
The workflow for assigning a custom domain name of your site consists of the following steps:
- Buy and register a domain name
- Add the domain name to your site
- Point the domain name to Business Catalyst
Step 1 - Buy and register a domain name
If not already done, purchase and register a domain name with a domain registrar. For more information, see How to Register Your Own Domain Name by Christopher Heng on thesitewizard.com.
Step 2 - Add the domain name to your site
Once you've purchased the domain, it's time to add it to your site. Access Admin > Site Settings > Site Domains and select New Domain.
Enter your domain name in its plain format (without http://www). Example: mydomain.com.
You'll be able to select between several options, depending on where your want to host DNS and E-mail.
- (Recommended) Use this service to host your website.
- Use an external DNS Server .
Only if you choose the setting above will you be able to to use our service for email.
You can however setup e-mail with external services (Google Apps, Office 365, GoDaddy, etc.) with any option you select for DNS server at this step
- (Recommended) Use this service for e-mail as well as for hosting the custom domain.
- Use your Google Apps account for email .
Google specific MX records will be needed for the use of Google Apps. See the link for the full setup tutorial.
- Use another external service for email
You may choose to host email with another provider. You'll have to manually setup advanced DNS records such as MX and CNAME .
- Do not use email for this domain
With DNS hosted through our service you can choose this option to use our service for email. This will automatically create the necesarry MX and CNAME Records, instantly allowing you to connect to webmail at mail.yourdomain.com.
Note: For the best experience using Business Catalyst we recommend adding a maximum of 50 site domains. For more details please see the Business Catalyst limitations .
Step 3 - Point the domain name to our servers (redelegation)
Note: This step assumes you have previously selected to Use this service to host your website
After adding a domain name to your Business Catalyst site, the confirmation message above will display our namservers and corresponding IP addreses. You now only need to point the domain name to these DNS servers from the console provided by your registrar. This is also known as redelegating the domain name:
Log in to your domain registrar's control panel.
Use the login name and password that you created when you registered the domain name.
Look for the option to set or change name servers.
The workspace for managing domain name servers (or DNS) is different for each registrar. See the registrar website or contact the registrar for help.
Replace any existing name servers with the following name servers:
- ns1.worldsecuresystems.com - 126.96.36.199
- ns2.worldsecuresystems.com - 188.8.131.52
- ns3.worldsecuresystems.com - 184.108.40.206
