Configuration of your email client

Go ahead and open the Accounts window by going to Tools > Accounts:

 Go to accounts

Then add a new account by clicking the bottom-left plus sign and choosing Other Email...

Add new account

The new client settings that we need to add are the following:

  • Inbound (receive emails)
    • Inbound Server:
    • Inbound Server Type: IMAPS (993)/ POP3S (995)
    • User Name:
    • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
    • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • Outbound (send emails)
    • Outbound Server:
    • Outbound Server Type: SMTPS (465)
    • User Name:
    • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
    • Authentication Method: Normal Password

Mirror the settings from the picture below, be sure to tick "Use SSL to connect (recommended)" for both servers and click on Add Account.

Add mail settings

Now for the last step, just select the newly created account and click the More Options... button at the bottom. This will open up the settings for the Outgoing server. We need to make sure we choose "User Name and Password" as Authentication method and complete the inputs like in the picture below.

SMTP Authentication

Congratulations, you have now set up your email client to use SSL ecryption for both incoming and outgoing communications.

In this article we have used Outlook 2016 for Mac as an example on how to use SSL for sending/receiving emails however the principle is the same for each mail client:

  • You need to use encrypted connection (SSL) for POP protocol on port 995 (for IMAP protocol on port 993) and/or encrypted connection (SSL) for SMTP on port 465.
  • Use as inbound/outbound server and make sure the authentication method is "Normal Password" for both of them.
