Creating Catalogs

Catalogs are used to display and manage groups of products on your online store. All products must be assigned to one or more catalogs in order to be displayed on your site. This article describes how to create a catalog, then either insert the catalog in a page, or link directly to the catalog from your menu.

Create a catalog

To create a catalog, select E-Commerce > Catalogs and click Add Catalog. On the catalog details screen, you can specify the below properties:

  • Parent Catalog - This option allows you to make this a sub-catalog of another existing catalog. Select the parent catalog from the drop-down menu.
  • Template - You have the option to wrap this catalog in one of your site templates. Products within this catalog use this template for the detailed product view.
  • Thumbnail Image - You can upload and select an image for this catalog. This image can be displayed using {tag_image} in the individual catalog online shop layout. For more details, see Displaying and Customizing Catalogs .
  • Show Prices to - You have the option to hide the retail price of products from customers that are not logged in to your site. This is used with the Wholesaler workflow. For more details, see Set up wholesale purchases on your online store .

Once you are done setting these properties, click Save. The Products tab is now available in the upper section of the page. Add products to the catalog by clicking the Products tab and moving content from the left panel to the right.

Note: For the best experience using Business Catalyst we recommend creating a maximum of 20000 catalogs


Adding metadata for individual catalogs

Configuring the catalog

You can add metadata to individual catalogs which will give each catalog page its own unique SEO properties.

  1. Select E-Commerce > Catalogs, then select one of your catalogs from the list.

    If you have not created any catalogs, see Create a catalog

  2. Click to expand the More Options section:

  3. Specify the following:
    • Catalog Title - This is used as the title of the catalog page. Example
    • Catalog Description - This field can be used to display a description of the catalog. Alternatively it can be used as a meta description for the catalog detail page. .
  4. Click Save.

The next step is to customize your catalog detail layout to add the SEO meta data to the head of your catalog pages.

Customizing the catalog layout

  1. Select Site Manager > Module Templates, and then select Online Shop Layouts.  
  2. Select the Individual Catalog Layout and then click the HTML view.
  3. Create the <head> and </head> tags if they're not already in the HTML view.
  4. Enter the below between the <head> and </head> tags:
  5. Save the layout.

The information you entered in the catalog description field will now be added to the meta data in the head of your catalog page. To test this, preview your catalog and view the HTML source.
