Overriding the double opt-In confirmation for campaign submissions

The double opt-in confirmation feature for email campaigns is enabled by default. In this article, you'll get information about why confirming subscriptions is important, as well as steps to disable it (in very rare cases where you feel it is necessary).

Warning: the acceptable email campaign bounce rate should stay under 1%. Bounce rates over this limit are usually generated by sending campaigns to purchased mailing lists or to customers that haven't gone through the double opt-in process and haven't signed up to receive newsletters form your site.

In almost every case, it is a best practice to use the system's double OPT-IN process when visitors sign up to a newsletter, because it ensures the the email address that was subscribed was not entered by a third-party. If it was, and there isn't a double-opt in confirmation (where the subscriber gets a confirmation email and clicks a link to complete the subscription process), then the recipient may think that your business is sending them spam.

Consider that spam is very harmful to your business, because rather than encouraging subscribers to feel connected to your company and its products and services, the recipient may feel that you are harassing them without their consent. Additionally Internet Service Providers (ISPs) look for signs of abuse and may choose to black list (not deliver) future email messages sent by the From address you use to publish email campaigns and newsletters. This can potentially be a huge disadvantage and it is very important to understand the consequences.

Most subscribers are very familiar with the process of receiving a confirmation email and clicking a link to confirm their subscription. Rather than an obstacle, they view this as a precaution taken by the business to safeguard their privacy and ensure they wish to subscribe.

However, after thoroughly weighing the cons of disabling the normal safeguards and standards of email marketing, if you determine that it is absolutely necessary, you can bypass the double opt-in process. After making this change, subscribers that enter their email address into a subscription form are automatically subscribed. They will not receive a confirmation message or have any method to confirm that they intended to subscribe to receive your email campaigns and newsletters.

Follow these steps:

  1. Choose Modules > Web Forms and select the name of the sign up form used to register subscribers.
  2. Click the HTML tab to edit the sign up form's source code in the online editor.
  3. Locate the Action URL of the form in the source code. It will look similar to this:
  4. Update that URL, to add the following bold text at the end of the URL string:

After making this change, any subscriber that enters their email address into the subscription form will automatically be added to the recipient list -- they won't receive the follow-up confirmation message first.

Warning: If a prankster decides to sign up their friend's email addresses to various newsletters, it's likely the recipient will blame the business sending the messages and will never know that a third-party has been entering their email address in the sign up forms.

In addition to managing subscribers to avoid them from unsubscribing, it is also important to manage the email addresses that bounce because the user account no longer exists or the mail box is unavailable. This practice ensures that your email campaigns are more successful.
